To Make A Great Flower Out Of Cactus.

(Today a friend sent me a picture of a cactus flower and asked "Isn't it pretty?" This is dedicated to those who appreciate its beauty)

I bought a cactus. A week later it died. And I got depressed, because I thought, Damn. I am less nurturing than a desert.

- Demetri Martin, New York Magazine, October 3, 2005

Some plants die from too much nurturing. They thrive better if left alone.

“Who wants to become a writer? And why? Because it's the answer to everything. To ''Why am I here?'' To uselessness. It's the streaming reason for living. To note, to pin down, to build up, to create, to be astonished at nothing, to cherish the oddities, to let nothing go down the drain, to make something, to make a great flower out of life, even if it's a cactus.”

- Enid Bagnold

Have I answered "Why do you write?".

Many eyes go through the meadow, but few see the flowers in it.

The Rose That Lives Its Little Hour.

Loveliest of lovely things are they
On earth that soonest pass away.
The rose that lives its little hour
Is prized beyond the sculptured flower.

- William Cullen Bryant 'A Scene on the Banks of the Hudson'

Many keep plastic flowers because it last forever
But I would rather mourn the withered rose
That gave love its hour.

The fairest things have fleetest end,
Their scent survives their close:

But the rose's scent is bitterness

To him that loved the rose.

- Francis Thompson (1859-1907), British poet.

The scent is bitter because the scent was sweet.

The Hand That Gives Flowers.

A bit of fragrance clings to the hand that gives flowers.

- Chinese Proverb

And it is sweeter than that bouquet of flowers.

Stretching his hand out to catch the stars, he forgets the flowers at his feet.

-Jeremy Bentham

Yet every night he stretched in vain to catch the stars,
While the waiting flowers withered and died at his feet.
